Common Questions

Question
Answer
If I donate money to the Friends of Smyrna Library (FOSL), what will it be used for? Unspecified donations are placed in an endowment from which funds are carefully spent to support the library. Examples of recent purchases made by the Friends of Smyrna Library (FOSL) on behalf of donors include a $3000 purchase of genealogical books and a $700 contribution to the children's summer reading program.

If you want to direct the expenditure of a specific cash donation, please contact our officers to discuss implementing your gift. Thank you for your consideration and generosity.
Can I specify a donation from my estate in my will for the benefit of the Smyrna Library? Yes. FOSL is able to both accept your donation and assist your lawyer in planning your bequest. Please contact our president to learn more.
Do you have a list of books specifically desired by the library?

I would like to buy and donate a book.
Yes. Please see The Children's Book Wish List.
Can I donate used books to the library?

Yes. We welcome donations of used hardback and paperback books in good condition. The library has a collection of over 100,000 books and it is always adding and replacing books. Donated books meeting a specific need will be added to the library's collection. Other books will be sold at one of our book sales. Last year we raised thousands of dollars from the sale of donated used books. Thank you for your donation!

What do you do with donated used books that are unique and may have greater value? Occasionally the library receives donations of books that may have greater value - in demand bestsellers, first editions, author signed, antique, etc. In these cases we will either add the book to a special collection or sell it for a premium and donate the proceeds. If you would like to donate a book that you feel has greater value, please advise the library staff when making your donation so its maximum value will be realized.
Why do you collect used computer printer ink jet cartridges? We collect and sell used ink jet cartridges to a recycling company. Last year we raised almost $500 from this innovative program. Please place your used cartridges in the bin beneath the FOSL display case in the library lobby.
Why do you solicit donations of old magazines to the library? Used magazines are sold for 10 cents each at the Make A Friend Today book sale near the circulation desk. Because of the nominal price, this fund raising program has become very popular. So, please bring in as many magazines as you can carry!
What else can I donate that will benefit the library?

FOSL welcomes the non-cash donation of products and services. Please see our current list of desired items if you wish to make a non-cash donation.

Can I help with FOSL events without becoming a member? Yes. Please contact any of our officers and make them aware of your interest. Or, watch this website and if you see something of interest, contact us then.
