Third Thursday Program and Guest Announced by Friends
of Smyrna Library
Susan Gilbert Harvey Will Discuss Her Latest Book
SMYRNA,
GA (September 13, 2006) - The Friends of Smyrna Library
has announced its featured guest for its September Third
Thursday program. Susan Gilbert Harvey will discuss
and sign her book, "Tea With Sister Anna: A Paris
Journal." The event takes place Thursday, September
21 at 7:30 pm at the Smyrna Library in the downstairs
meeting room at 100 Village Green Circle in the Smyrna
Village. There is no admission charge and books will
be for sale. For more information, please contact the
library at 770-431-2860 or visit friendsofsmyrnalibrary.org.
For ten years, Ms. Harvey researched the Paris life
of her great-aunt, Georgia artist Anna McNulty Lester
(1862-1900). Her book contains some of Ms. Lester's
charcoal nude drawings as well as sketches by the Scottish
artist, Frances Blaikie (1869-1915). Ms. Harvey recently
returned from Scotland where she attended the Edinburgh
International Book Festival and donated books in Ms.
Blaikie's memory to the Glasgow School of Art and the
Melrose Library near Ms. Blaikie's home. Ms. Harvey's
talk will give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the
making of "Tea with Sister Anna: A Paris Journal."
In June, Ms. Harvey was named 2006 Georgia Author of
the Year for independently-published memoirs.
"We think it is important to offer programs with
a southern theme, and with this program we get that
and much more," stated Linda Evans, president of
the Friends of Smyrna Library organization. "There
are some interesting angles to the story of her great
aunt, especially the historical perspective of an artist
who lived in Georgia and then moved to Paris in the
late 1800s. So much has changed over time. The world
seems to have become smaller and this discussion is
an opportunity to look back and reflect on the life
of a Georgia native who lived abroad when the world
seemed much larger."
Third Thursdays, sponsored by the Friends of Smyrna
Library, is a monthly social event that focuses on building
community spirit among patrons of the library as well
as the community-at-large. Over the course of the year,
the Friends organization will hold a variety of activities
as part of its Third Thursday program to engage a broad
audience and create new experiences for all patrons.
The Friends of Smyrna Library is a non-profit organization
that has served the Smyrna Library since 1991. The organization
develops and executes various adult programs and helps
fund children programs to promote appreciation for the
library and to grow its membership. The Friends of Smyrna
Library is the sponsor of "Murder Goes South,"
a southern mystery book festival that brings authors
and readers throughout the region together for discussions,
workshops and more. It is the highlight of the Friends
yearly program schedule. To learn more about the Friends
